HUEN 3843: TPC-Harry Potter and the Conflict of Being
May 14 - June 1, Monday-Friday, 9:00-12:15
Maymester at the University of Colorado at Boulder
Course description: engineering.colorado.edu/herbs… (that's my professor with the glasses on the right)

I'll be uploading this daily with a summary of each day, so that I'm not just taking a Harry Potter class and hoarding all the experiences for myself.

There will be thirteen days all told. Supafast class.

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ALL SIX BOOKS, BE WARNED: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

DAY ONE:
A standard intro class, talking about the series as a whole. We discussed why we thought the series was so popular. We listed off a lot of the main conflicts present in the series. Here's the list we came up with:
- good vs. evil (duh)
- bullying (Dursleys, Malfoys, Voldemort)
- nature vs. nurture (and how Harry has had zero good nurture yet turns out good anyway, so maybe it's nature and he gets it from his parents)
- male vs. female (especially as Harry, Ron, Hermione, etc get older)
- racial/culture issues (centaurs, giants, purebloods, money, house-elves)
- traditions/reality (Fudge wanting things to keep going as they are, not wanting to accept Voldemort's back in Book 5)
- age (especially in PS/SS when they feel they're too young to be of any help to anyone)
- athletic/Quidditch "conflicts"
- House Cup competition
- booksmarts vs. instinct (Hermione says in PS/SS that Harry's a better wizard: ""Books! And cleverness! There are more important things -- friendship and bravery," and how Hermione's learning as the series goes on that she needs to trust her instincts more and the library less)
- invisible vs. visible (or rather, magic vs. non-magic)

DAY TWO - Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone Part 01:
We discussed what Harry thinks of himself in the first half of Book 1.
We found quotes where he bets aloud he'll be put into Hufflepuff, found many, many quotes about him being insecure about his magical abilities and him possibly making a huge fool of himself if (a) he doesn't live up to everyone's Boy-Who-Lived expectations and be talented, or (b) if the magical world doesn't even exist (which is a big issue for the first week or so). We talked about how he thinks saying Voldemort's name is a sign of ignorance about wizarding customs, but everyone else thinks it's bravery. We concluded that his worst fear is that Hogwarts is all a dream, but his second-worst fear is that he won't measure up to everyone's expectations (which he of course does, spectacularly).
Another big topic was the Hogwarts houses and why certain characters were put into each. For instance, Neville seems a Hufflepuff and Hermione a Ravenclaw. Yet at the end of SS/PS, both have proven that they can be brave and deserve having been put into Gryffindor. However, we debated for awhile whether the hat puts you into Gryffindor because it knows you are brave, or if it thinks you should be braver and wants to expose you to those kinds of people to bring the bravery out in you (like Neville was taught to stand up to his friends - otherwise he wouldn't've done it). There was also an interesting parallel: Neville represents Hufflepuff, Hermione represents Ravenclaw, Ron represents the only true Gryffindor in the group, and Harry really should be in Slytherin - all four houses represented (just interesting). We also discussed that Gryffindor and Slytherin really are almost the same house - both have great ambition and bravery, it's just Slytherin has great ambition and bravery at the expense of others, which sets them apart.
Then we talked about the backgrounds of each of the main characters, and the professor made a joke that Neville has great aurors for parents, Harry had talented parents as well, Ron comes from a pureblood lineage, Malfoy obviously comes from a rich pureblood family, and Hermione... well, her parents are dentists. X3;

DAY THREE - Philsopher's/Sorcerer's Stone Part 02:
We focused on the Mirror of Erised, and talked about Plato's version of our maturation of desire: first we want a thing (a pencil), then we want a thing because of a quality (it can write), then we become aware of just being attracted to that quality that could be applied to anything (wanting a pen because it can write too), then we want to be in an institution that embodies that quality (so, like - school with it's "writing-ness"), then we want just that quality ("writing-ness"), and then apparently an inifinite Good/Truth/Beauty, or something like that. Look up Plato. It warps your mind, but Philosophy is so fun. So basically, we said that Harry looks in the Mirror and sees his family (minus the Dursleys). But he doesn't just want a family, he wants being in a family and the feeling that represents. Whereas when Ron looks in the Mirror, he sees himself winning the House Cup, being Head Boy, etc. More materialistic desires - obviously he's less mature than Harry is. (And of course, the guy next to me leaned over and said: "Give it a few years. He'll see Hermione.")
Then we talked about the unicorn and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone and how those embodied desire. But uh, I remember those weren't very interesting, and so I didn't take notes. Haha, sorry, guys.

One-page "Thought Assignment" 1 of 4 (due Friday): "If you were to look into the Mirror of Erised, what would you see?" To be written in two parts, (1) a description of what you see, and (2) analysis of what you see ("...why you desire this, where this desire comes from, and what is your response to having this desire").

DAY FOUR - Chamber of Secrets Part 01:
A great quote by my professor that I just have to mention: "So, we're gonna start class in a minute. If you wanna start preparing, start thinking about Harry Potter."
lol, anyway. So we talked about a lot of things. I'm going to try and boil it all down to a few key points, because we wandered all over the place.
Differences between PS/SS and CoS: (1) PS is much more (plot-wise) straightforward, (2) CoS actually begins to allude to future plot in the series, (3) PS/SS has more explanations of how things work and CoS has more character/plot development (issues of class, etc), and (4) PS/SS is all about desire (Harry for happiness and his parents, Voldemort for the Stone) and CoS is about identity (Gryffindor v Slytherin, etc).
Cycles Harry goes through: (1) PMS, (2) Has a great year at Hogwarts, then comes home and doubts it ever happened, loses hope, (3) Harry's value is only as good as his last "save" (in PS went from famous to no-name when he lost 150 points in one day, then became famous again at the end of the book; pegged as Slytherin's heir all CoS, then defeats the real Heir and is liked again).
Friendship is a key theme in CoS. A lot of people said that actually in CoS their friendship is most stable, because they fight a lot less, and even when Hermione is petrified, her absence is palpable. We talked about why they're such good friends: each of them knows they're own territory (Harry: hero, Hermione: brains, Ron: wizarding world knowledge-bringer (only one who knows these things, technically, since H/Hr were brought up with muggles). They all have muggles in common - H/Hr raised by them, Ron's dad works and is fascinated with them. They're all about something, and that's why Neville can't really be a part of the trio yet - until they all share something in common with Neville (the Prophecy, maybe).
The wizarding world is still tainted with prejudice: (1) Sirius mistreats Kreacher (shhh, he's still a house-elf), (2) the Weasleys look down on their squib relative, (3) centaurs, etc. not invited to attend Hogwarts.
The muggles were untrustworthy during the Witch Burning part of history, and that's why Slytherin never wanted muggle-borns in Hogwarts - not a pureblood thing, but because muggle society might find out about wizarding society and KEEL THEM ALL.
Lastly, we discussed the name of the book (which is interesting, because I'm only used to discussing titles of books before they come out - indeed, a guy interrupted the prof asking "So, what's a Deathly Hallows?" and we all lawl'd). The prof said that there's more Secrets in CoS than meets the eye: (1) Hagrid's expulsion story, (2) Malfoy's threatening of Ministry families to get Albus out, (3) Harry keeps the no-magic rule from the Dursleys, (4) Percy's girlfriend <3, (5) Ginny's infatuation, (6) "Ginny's" diary, (7) Harry keeping the Polyjuice Potion from Dumbledore (and everyone else), and (8) what Dobby won't tell Harry.

DAY FIVE - Chamber of Secrets Part 02:
A flashback to Philosophy 101 as we discussed the meaning of "identity": our sensing experience, choices, recognition/projection of self, our calibration of ourselves versus other people, genetics, memorial continuity, and our values. We discussed how Lockhart stole other people's identities in CoS.
Harry's identity is clearly in conflict with what his true identity is, having obtained several Slytherin traits the night his parents died, yet being the true "son of Gryffindor" (our prof liked this phrase) at the same time. We also discussed about how Harry should've stayed behind to let other professors handle the situation at the end of CoS, yet how being "safe" and "left behind" were complete opposites to Harry's character.
We also talked about when Harry and Ron (and Hermione, I suppose) had their Polyjuice Potion adventures, and how Harry should've realized that he couldn't pull off being a Slytherin when impersonating Crabbegoyle. The prof pointed out the irony that after Harry took the potion, his own shoes didn't fit. ("If the shoe don't fit...")

DAY SIX - Prisoner of Azkaban Part 01:
Main themes in PoA: familial relationships (Marge, Sirius), hidden/"complexifying" identity (Sirius, Wormtail/Scabbers, Lupin, and all of them as the Marauders), the development of the outside wizarding world (Sirius, Fudge, Knight Bus, Hogsmeade), fear (Dementors, boggarts), truth and how do you know the truth (James according to Snape, Scabbers, Hermione + time turner, Crookshanks, Hogwarts' secret passageways, Sirius, Lupin).
We found out that Lupin... is flawed. D: Lawl. He doesn't tell Dumbledore that the Marauders are illegal animagi because he wants to save face with Dumbledore for trusting him so much. And he doesn't tell Dumbledore that when Sirius escapes because that would mean that Lupin had been lying to him the whole time, and all he wants is to be loved. <3
We also brought up how actually, Dementors don't instill fear. Not really, anyway. They instill unhappiness that comes with bad memories that may or may not be frightening. The subject of chocolate reigned for a few minutes as well. And by the way, Fudge = chocolate.
We wondered if Voldemort would be affected by Dementors - he doesn't have "good" thoughts for them to steal, nor does he really have "bad" memories.
Snape. He gives Harry increasing access to his parents - through mean stories in PoA and GoF, and the pensieve in OotP. Calls himself "Master of this school" in PoA (trying to get map to divulge its secrets) - ego issues. It also came to me that the Defense Against the Dark Arts position is cursed... Snape takes the job in HBP, and lo and behold he's driven out!

DAY SEVEN - Prisoner of Azkaban Part 02:
Our professor got all philosophical on us and introduced two theories about evil. (1) The Privation Theory: Evil is the privation/absence of good, evil is the "twisting" of something good (example: Voldemort is the twisted version - yet an otherwise identical form - of Harry), (2) Manichaen Theory: Evil has substance, evil can be a thing, and good and evil are physically battling each other in the universe.
Taking the twisted part, we listed the twisted characters we could think of. Obviously Harry/Voldemort came up, but someone also came up with how Umbridge is the twisted, eviller form of Mrs. Weasley. o_O Don't know how that works...
The prof got all exited when he found a Snape quote where it described Snape's face as being twisted by an ugly grin. We discussed how Snape is twisted. He manipulated behind the scenes to get people to notice Lupin's werewolfyness, and uh... I swear there were more things, but apparently whatever. XD;
Also, expecto patroum in Latin would translate roughly to "I expect a father". D:

One page "Thought Assignment" 2 of 4 (due Tuesday): "Choose one passage from Prisoner of Azkaban and write a one-page commentary on it. Your main goal is to answer the following question: What does this passage mean and what is its significance to the rest of the Harry Potter series?

DAY EIGHT - Goblet of Fire Part 01:
How is GoF a bridge between 1-3 and 5-6(-7)? It's a plot bridge - first you build up Voldemort's evil and then after GoF have him be evil. Again, I swear there were more things, but my pencil hand must've gotten drowsy.
Random little things about GoF: (1) Sirius' speech about treating house-elves versus the whole Sirius/Kreacher 'ship in OotP, (2) Ron has a man-crush on "Vikkie" (lawl), (3) Harry's "hero complex" turns more into a "chivalry complex," (4) Ron's "maroon" color = marooned (odd one out), moron (lol), (5) Malfoy hates Ron and Hermione over things they have no choice over ("mudbloodness"), while Ron hates Harry and Hermione for the same reasons (fame, this time), (6) the standard "good versus evil" theme becomes, at the end of GoF, "good versus evil versus 'gross inactivity.'"

DAY NINE - Goblet of Fire Part 02:
(You should see the doodles on this page. Dark Marks everywhere. I guess I was bored?)
Crouch's name means that Crouch crouches a lot, in wait for other people and events. Yet his descriptions in GoF are always "stiff" and "upright" - contrasting to his name.
Also, Crouch v. Dumbledore v. Moody? Crouch and Moody are determined to do anything to get what they want, yet Moody won't kill if he doesn't have to. Dumbledore is on the same side as Crouch and Moody, yet believes in being flexible to get what he wants.
Words describing Dumbledore in previous books have been "calmly," "twinkle," etc. In GoF, however, words like "sharply" and even "bitterly" are used for Dumbledore. He's having issues with being taken off-guard by the Triwizard Cup and not being able to figure out what's going on.

DAY TEN - Order of the Phoenix Part 01:
Angst. Dumbledore's lack of control over the Ministry. Harry not being able to slip up and make mistakes at school anymore. Loss of Harry's father figures (Fudge [always was there to take care of him - kinda], Dumbledore, and Sirius).
Themes: Harry versus Hormones (Cho), Harry vs Umbridge, v Snape, v friends, v Cedric (Cho), v Dumbledore, v death, v Sirius, v Hagrid (which, by the way, is officially and annoying plotline according to the prof, because it has the least to do with Voldemort), v himself (Harry), v Ministry, v rest of Hogwarts, v Kreacher, v Dursleys, v Mrs Weasley, v O.W.L.s (which aren't "ordinary," ironically), v the Prophecy, v reputation/media/celebrity status/public opinion, v relationships in general, v hormones in general. (*phew*)
General things about OotP: Harry is ashamed that he expected to be Prefect and better than Ron, Harry thinks that the "love protection" stuff is crap because that means he himself is not special, Dumbledore mobilizes the golden statues to sacrifice themselves for his safety - mirroring how Dumbledore views love as a sacrificial ... thing, Sirius and Snape are not emotionally mature enough to get over their differences, Harry's annoyance with them in Book 5 means that he's already more mature than Sirius and Snape to see their fight as dumb as it is, and last thing - Dumbledore can't see how badly Snape mistreats Harry because he trusts Snape too much (*red light* Character flaw! omg!).

DAY ELEVEN - Order of the Phoenix Part 02:
(After our movie/pizza night - we watched Goblet of Fire. ^___^)
GoF movie vs. GoF book: (1) In the maze, Harry was competitive - completely not his personality, (2) the dragon wasn't motherly and protecting its eggs, (3) severe lack of classes - seemed like summer camp, and many more issues we all had with the movie. Hurray for fancomplaining!
Molly: Impressive - holds this huge family together on such a small budget, yet is a "brilliant multi-tasker" (is aware of pop culture - aka Celestina Warbeck & Co)
Umbridge: follows orders irrationally/sacrificing-ly (like Percy), thinks herself a good manipulator but actually sucks (just shouts her point of view at people, her last defense is "But you just don't understand."), like Crouch - uses any means necessary but just ends up making things worse.
Hermione: doesn't have girl friends...? Yet apparently has a gossip network, since she relays info from Lavender & Co.
Other random info from OotP: Seekers are most important - yet don't actually participate in the game, OotP gives a longer running commentary of what's going on in Harry's head - gives us a more in-depth look at who he is.

DAY TWELVE - Half-Blood Prince Part 01:
Magical schools: "disturbing lack of math," less theory and more practicum, no foreign language (or Latin, which you would think would be crucial), and Defense Against the Dark Arts really is a weird class (think of having to take Karate)...
Slughorn's like Lupin - he puts Harry at risk by not admitting to something he's ashamed about (this time, the Horcruxes).
Voldemort had a grasp on Occlumency already? He looked into Dumbledore's eyes in the orphanage to determine whether or not Dumbledore was lying...

DAY THIRTEEN - Half-Blood Prince Part 02:
People who had almost the same lives but made different decisions down the line that "split their destinies" (or, as we kept going, which of the characters are just alike, lol):
Draco/Dudley, Neville/Harry, Neville/Pettigrew, Ron&Hermione/Crabbe&Goyle, Snape/Sirius, Snape/Harry (both had bad childhoods), McGonagall/Hermione, Hagrid/Dumbledore (Hagrid trusts Aragog, Dumbledore trusts Snape), "Mrs Molfoy/Lucious" (<- what happened, there? XD I don't even know who we were talking about XD), Weasleys/Malfoys, Narcissa/Bellatrix, Harry/James, Snape/Voldemort (changed their names), Lupin/Fenrir, Dumbledore/Voldemort, Ernie M./Slughorn/Lockhart/TMRiddle ("pompous"), Bellatrix/Snape, Kreacher/Dobby/Winky, Luna/Myrtle, Rosmerta/Aberforth. (*phew*)
The soul: damage is permanent, or can it be healed?
The Big Snape Question. Proof for both sides:
- Dumbledore asked for Snape. Not Pomfrey, Snape - and not because of a potion, either. He just needed Snape for some unknown reason.
- "Severus, please... what have I done for you to betray me?" or "Severus, please... don't blow your cover now - just kill me!"?
- Perhaps an Occlumency exchange between Dumbledore and Snape so Dumbledore could give him last-minute instructions?
- Dumbledore was trying to save Malfoy's soul by preventing him from committing murder. Why would he let Snape go and do the same thing (commit murder, I mean)?
- Dumbledore wouldn't commit to a plan with Snape that involved anyone being killed in cold blood.
- Snape's look of revulsion, hatred - because of what he thinks of Dumbledore, or because of what he "has to do"?
- Snape isn't teaching Harry while he's battling him, he was ordered to leave Harry alone and actually is acting a lot like Bellatrix did in OotP ("You haven't got the nerve!" etc). Plus, at that point he's not performing for anyone. What would he have to lose to tell Harry?
- Dumbledore's an animagus - he can turn into a phoenix and be reborn. The smoke from Dumbledore's pyre mysteriously turns into a phoenix - is that Dumbledore rising again? However, in recent interviews, JKR said that Dumbledore "will not pull a Gandalf," so... *shrug*

More quotes! And lots of 'em! ♥

Prof: [imitating Snape] " Potter! Skin Malfoy's shrivelfig!" There you go, write your dissertation on the "shrivelfig" and its Freudian properties.

Prof: Not that [Goblet of Fire] sucks, but that there's a higher S.Q. ... "Suck Quotient".
Student: Yes, there's a definite change in atmospheric pressure for the fourth book.

Prof: [after having someone describe what a hero complex is] When we think "hero complex," now, we'll see the puppy hanging above the boiling cauldron, and then Harry Potter showing up.
Student: Do doo-doo!♪

Prof: Actually, I've never seen 24, so I don't know anything about Jack Bauer except that he's the über-über-everything."

Prof: [talking about Rev. Ted Haggard] If you've got a "meth... /gay/hooker" problem...

Student: Dumbledore is such a pimp. He's always giving orders.

Prof: Doesn't that absolutely, unequivocally... suck?

Prof: And who do we find out did all this in the Ministry? Umbridge. ... What a bitch.

Prof: [discussing John 3:16 ("Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends")] Well, I mean, JKR's not a hardcore Christian. We're not turning this into a Christian document moment.

Student 1: ... Because Hogwarts is the best school in Great Britain.
Student 2: Then why is, like, Neville - who's basically a squib - there?
Student 3: Because Neville's awesome?

Student: Well, if you think of magic like programming...

Student 1: I really didn't want to think about Dementor sex.
Student 2: Maybe they reproduce by meiosis! They just - split!
Student 3: Or! They bud! Just produce little Dementor buds off their shoulders and they go floating away~
Me: [facepalm]

Student 1: It takes two to tango.
Student 2: Or have sex, as the case may be.
Me: [facepalm again]

Student 1: And what's-his-name at the Hog's Head...
Me: Tom?
Student 2: No, that's the bartender at the Leaky Cauldron.
Me: Oh. *lightbulb* Aberforth!
(Go trivia!)

Class: [discussing the wardrobe Dumbledore sets on fire in the orphanage]
Student: The bridge to Narnia!

Prof: [talking about Luna] She's really interesting in a lot of ways. [pause] And I hope she ends up with Neville.
Me: [thinking] Waaat? Shipping? No - it can't be!

Prof: [draws Snape]
Student: [leans over and says to me] He looks like a Muppet. o_O

Prof: [about Snape] Is he really a triple-quadruple agent who's really working for Tony Blair? D:

Student: [makes an important point about a character on the board]
Prof: Okay, so we'll put a double box around that [draws]... and footnote you. [draws star and scribbles students name on bottom of board]

Prof: You get the impression that Ginny's in control. "Okay, now it's time to date me ... Okay, now it's time for you to stop that."

Prof: Oh I know, it's so early. I mean, my goodness, it's not even ten o'clock yet.

Prof: So there are certain things you just learn as you grow up. Guys, this is for you. Say there are five urinals in the male bathroom.
Class: [laughs, knows what's coming]
Prof: [draws five squares on board] Guys, you go to the bathroom. Which one do you go to?
Guys: #1.
Prof: Say someone's at #1. Which one do you-
Guys: [simultaneously] #5.
Class: [laughs]
Prof: And if someone's at #5?
Guy: #3.
Prof: What if someone's at 1, 3, and 5?
Guys: [simulatenously] You wait.
Class: [laughs]
Prof: And all rules, of course, break down at a Bronco's game.

Student: Are you saying that McGonagall is Dumbledore's "Head Mistress"?

Student: I'm just saying. If Sirius and Snape had gotten hitched, their personalities would've smoothed over some.
Prof: Actually, I think if Sirius and Snape had gotten hitched, they would've argued a lot more.

Student: After Book 3 everything became really dark, and I don't know if she ran out of Prozac or what, but...

Student (named Grayson): [makes a good point about Snape's personality being too complicated]
Prof: Okay, so we'll add a third "complicated" category. So it stands: Friend, Foe, and Grayson.

Predictions
Our professor gave us a homework assignment to predict what we thought would happen in Book 7. He then emailed us back the results of all our predictions. They are as follows:

1.  Is Snape "friend" or "foe?"

Friend: 50%
Foe: 44%
Foe now, will turn Friend in Book 7: 6%

2.  If indeed two characters will die in Book 7, who do you think they will be?

Voldemort: 58%
Harry: 50%
Snape: 27%
Draco: 27%
Pettigrew: 18%
Neville: 13%
Hermione: 13%
Hagrid: 9%
Lupin: 9%
Tonks: 5%
Ron: 5%
McGonagall: 5%
Dumbledore: 5% (after coming back to life)

3. Will Dumbledore somehow come back to life?

Yes: 22%
No: 88%

4. What is the identity of R.A.B.?

R(egulus) A(lphod) Black:  78%
Someone new and unknown: 12%
Red Baron:  3%
Nobody, it is a trick by Voldemort: 3%
Dumbledore's brother (3%)  [because he is supposedly the barman at the Hog's Head, and it is believed that he has possession of the Slytherin locket because it is mentioned that there is a locket being held at the Hog's Head in either book 5 or 6, I can't remember.]

Addendum to "someone new and unknown: R.A.B. is a yet-to-be introduced character who went to Hogwarts with Tom Riddle, and who was tormented by Tom Riddle, and was an earlier protégé of Dumbledore, but has been under the radar until now, likely because Dumbledore has ordered him to.

5. Will the Weasley-Delacoeur wedding be the site/occasion for an evil event?

Yes: 46%
No:  54%

6. Is Harry a horcrux?

Yes: 48%
No:  52%

7. What, if anything, will we learn about Aunt Petunia?

She is a witch: 45% (JKR says no)
She is a squib: 25%
Nothing: 15%
Former death eater saved by Lily: 5%
Dudley is a suppressed wizard:  5% (<- that's my suggestion XD)

Addendums: The whole family was magical; she secretly wishes she were a witch; she's very bitter due to magic's having driven a wedge between her and Lily's great sisterly relationship

8.  What, if any, couples will "walk off into the sunset" after Book 7? (Fleur and Bill data not included)

Ron and Hermione: 15
Harry and Ginny: 9
Neville and Luna: 3
Hagrid and Olympe: 4
Lupin and Tonks: 3
Harry and Hermione: 1
Snape and Narcissa: 1
Snape and Trelawney: 1
Neville and Ginny: 1
Krum and Hermione: 1

9. Which, if any, of those currently aligned with Voldemort will "repent" and help Harry? (this could be an out for the pro-Snape crowd, a foe who becomes a friend)

Draco: 17
Pettigrew: 8
Snape: 4
Narcissa: 2
Percy: 1
Rita: 1
Lucius: 1

Addendum: In the cases of Draco, Snape, Narcissa and Lucius, they will continue to hate Harry and act against Voldemort—Narcissa and Lucius doing so out of anger at Voldemort's treatment of Draco.

10. What other bold predictions (like Cain's "Dumbledore is an unregistered phoenix animagus) do you have for Book 7?  [I have attached the predictions]

- The journey to Godric's Hollow will be very interesting and will possibly be a confrontation with Death Eater's early on in the book. I have a feeling Neville may die protecting Harry as well. Unfortunately, I do not have any predictions as bold as that of Cain. Therefore, I shall borrow one from my favorite Mugglenet writer, Brandon. He believes, and I am intrigued, that the lake at Hogwarts and the underground lake at Gringotts mentioned only briefly in the first book are linked. An interesting theory, to be sure, though I don't know what role this may or may not play.
- Ginny will stalk Harry if he tells her to stay home.  She's not the type to take any of that "damsel in distress" folderol.
- Harry will basically miss a lot of school, but he's still going to go.  It'll just be like how Dumbledore was often missing during the school year in book 6.  After all, some of the best parts in the books are when they're going to school.  Besides, I want to see what the N.E.W.T. exams are like.
- Harry will splinch himself.
- Hermione's going to become something like Minister of Magic.
- Luna's going to rock everyone's socks off.
- That Percy will help his family and Harry in the fight against the Dark Side.
- I think Draco will fail to redeem himself.  I think he's a token coward, and I don't see it playing out any differently than Draco running away just like Karkaroff did.  He's run out of options.  Now, if Dumbledore were still alive, I'd see a chance at redemption, but I really don't think it's one of Harry's priorities to get everyone to give Draco a second chance, and I really don't think anyone will...
- I think that Snape was in love with Lily Potter and that it just added to his hatred of James...
- I think that was why he his the memory from Harry during Occlumency lessons.  NOT because he was embarrassed of how James and Sirius humiliated him (there had to have been plenty of instances of that, and it said that he only extracted, or hid, three memories in the book, why would he hide just that one?!).  I think he was more ashamed of his reaction to Lily when she was trying to help him – calling her a "mudblood" and everything...
- I think that's why he 'changed sides' (and he DID change sides!!) when he found out that it was the Potters that the prophecy was talking about and that they had died... I think that was the 'secret' that Dumbledore wouldn't tell anyone – his concrete evidence that Snape had really changed sides.
- I think he shows such hatred for Harry because he looks so much like his father, and that's just rubbing salt in the wound for Snape.
- I think that Snape loved Lily because she was the only one who was ever nice to him/treated him with any respect and dignity... I mean, from what we know about his childhood, he had it really rough at home, and the way it appears from the Pensieve, he had it really bad at school too... nobody from his own house stood up for him against Potter and Black...
- Ron will be involved in a major battle with some death eater, my guess is Bellatrix.
- Fleur is actually a Death Eater (or a DE-supporter), because her entire character was rooted around how she's incredibly superficial, and all of a sudden she falls for a Weasley and is determined to stay with him even after he becomes horribly unattractive. I think she knew the Weasleys were very close with Harry, and wanted to get inside and close to Harry.
- Dudley is a wizard. He performed magic when he was very young when he didn't get his way, and now is being completely spoiled so as that won't happen again. Vernon doesn't know, and Petunia's been in contact with Dumbledore to keep it that way.
- Norbert will come back, and assist the trio in finding the Horcruxes (as in, he'll be providing the transportation).
- Harry will come back to Hogwarts to use Dumbledore's pensieve and/or portrait to do more research on where the Horcruxes might be. Then he'll leave school with Ron and Hermione to find and destroy them.
(Those were mine. XD)
- Harry dies
- Molly becomes best friends with Fleur
- Sirius comes back to life from behind the veil, gets hit by Voldemort's killing curse instead of Harry, Harry kills the big V, and yet, tragically dies in the process.
- Cho and Ginny duke it out for Harry's love
- Rita gets out her quill again
- I have high hopes that one of the horcruxes will indeed be found in the room of requirement and that some of the others may be found inside of Hogwarts also.
- I believe the Ministry and the Order of the Phoenix will unite and form one group.  Their aim will be to restore the wizards' good image.  I think Harry will take a teaching position at Hogwarts because it's the only place he would want to call home.
- Mondungus has the locket horcrux in Azkaban
- I have a strong feeling that one of the Horcruxes was in the Blacks' house during the 5th book.  When Harry and his friends are cleaning out the dresser in the living room of the Black's house, the narration mentions cleaning out a large, heavy, gold locket amongst the other belongings. More specifically, it will be the real Horcrux that Dumbledore died trying to get because Regulus Black (R.A.B.) will have stolen it from the cave.  Unfortunately, since they tried to clean out everything in book 5, they might have thrown it away.  But, that's where Kretcher comes in.  He probably stole it and placed it in his room in an attempt to save precious family possessions.
- Voldemort has figured out Harry's a horacrux (he found out at the Ministry at the end of Book 5) and that's why he left him alone in Book 6.  He's been figuring out how to extract his soul from Harry, and I think Wormtail will have heard some details that Voldemort didn't intend for him to... I think that when Harry figures out he is a Horacrux, he'll play the hero and "die for the greater good" [think about/attempt to kill himself] and that Wormtail will pay back the life debt by divulging some of the info about how to extract the horacrux without killing himself.  I don't know if that counts as "repenting," but I do think that Wormtail will redeem himself in a small sense of the word!
- Another prediction is that Voldemort will kill Snape.  The mere assumption that Voldemort believes that Snape was simply fooling Dumbledore to be a double agent seems foolish.  Two of the smartest wizards in the world, Dumbledore and Voldemort, would have analyzed the depth of Snape's loyalty and the level of Snape's spying (double agent, triple agent, quadruple agent) far more than what has been presented thus far.  The difference between them is that Dumbledore will risk everything to believe in Snape, while Voldemort clearly has no habit of doing so.  Voldemort doesn't trust anyone and I'm sure he is using Snape very carefully, just as Snape is doing with him.  At what point Snape is killed, I'm not sure.
- Harry will return for his seventh year, and be made head boy.  He will sneak out every weekend and spare moment in search of horcruxes, and get in loads of trouble for it since mcgonnagal doesn't know.  he will drag ron and hermione along. he will find most of them over the summer before school starts.  He will leave the Dursleys for good at midnight on his seventeenth birthday.  There will be a big battle between the order of the phoenix and the death eaters.  the death eaters will win, but voldemort will be  and killed b/c of horcrux manipulations, leaving harry mortally wounded.  however, due madame pomfrey's extensive skills, harry will return to health and ride his firebolt off to italy with ginny, ron, hermione, neville, luna, tonks, mcgonnagal, the weasley's and everyone else who really needs a break.
- Well I have also heard and bought into that theory. Long ago. Dumbledore is consistent with Gandalf, Jesus and the Phoenix. So he will die, come back, then die again.
- Not sure, but I like Cain's!!  And I think Aunt Petunia will reveal she is an untrained witch and will somehow reveal this to help Harry
- I think Neville is going to play a big role in the last book.  I think he's going to do some major battling against some Death Eaters that'll shock everyone.
- Whatever Snape did to gain Dumbledore's trust will blow us away, so big I don't even know what it is. Harry is a Horcrux, this is in Harry's character and the stories, to sacrifice himself to take down Voldemort. Fawkes will play a part in the destruction of Voldemort and the sacrifice of Harry, since Fawkes has his two feathers in the two wands.
- Perhaps Neville is the child from the Prophecy, and not Harry?
- Perhaps Godrich Gryffindor is an animagus, who is the giant squid from the lake?
- Ron will be involved in a major battle with some death eater, my guess is Bellatrix.
- I have high hopes that one of the horcruxes will indeed be found in the room of requirement and that some of the others may be found inside of Hogwarts also.
- Harry goes the route of Anikan Skywalker and turns to the dark side.
- I believe the Ministry and the Order of the Phoenix will unite and form one group.  Their aim will be to restore the wizards' good image.  I think Harry will take a teaching position at Hogwarts because it's the only place he would want to call home.
